Microneedling in 2026: Why no two treatments should look the same

Treatments 13 May, 2026

Microneedling has been around long enough that people sometimes assume they already know what it is. A device, some needles, controlled injury to the skin, collagen response. And yes, that’s the foundation. But what makes it genuinely effective isn’t the device. It’s what a trained therapist does with it.

In 2026, the clinics and salons getting the best results from microneedling aren’t necessarily using the most expensive equipment. They’re using it thoughtfully adjusting variables to suit each client’s skin, layering it with the right actives and treating it as part of a longer skin journey rather than a one-off appointment.

Here’s what that actually looks like in practice.

Needle depth is not a one-size-fits-all setting

One of the most important (and most overlooked) aspects of professional microneedling is needle depth. The depth your therapist selects depends entirely on what your skin needs and where on your face they’re working.

Shallower depths, around 0.25mm to 0.5mm, are used for improving product absorption, surface texture, and general skin health. Deeper settings, from 1mm to 2.5mm, are reserved for concerns like acne scarring or significant textural irregularities, where we need to trigger a more substantial collagen remodelling response. Around the eyes and on thinner skin, depth is reduced significantly to stay safe.

This is one of the clearest differences between a professional treatment and an at-home device. Consumer rollers and micro-infusion tools are fixed at shallow cosmetic depths, which is fine for maintenance, but cannot produce the structural skin changes that a professionally calibrated session can.

The serum you pair with it matters as much as the needling itself

Microneedling creates microchannels in the skin i.e. temporary openings that allow active ingredients to reach the dermal layers where they’re actually needed. What you put into those channels makes a significant difference to your outcome.

At Meraki, our GFIT (Growth Factor Induced Therapy) treatments use the AQ Skin Solutions growth factor serum delivered via a dermastamp technique. Growth factors are proteins that signal the skin to repair and regenerate. Delivering them directly into the skin via microneedling channels supports collagen production, accelerates healing, and helps regulate the skin’s natural repair processes. It’s particularly well suited to sensitive skins and impaired barriers, which is not something you can say about all microneedling serums.

Depending on your skin concerns, your therapist may use different serums or actives such as hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamin C for pigmentation support or peptides for firming. The point is that the serum is chosen for your skin, not applied by default.

Combining microneedling with other treatments

Microneedling can be combined with other treatments to address more complex skin concerns or to improve overall results. Some combinations we work with at Meraki:

Microneedling followed by LED light therapy with Dermalux significantly reduces post-treatment redness and inflammation, shortens recovery time, and enhances the regenerative response. If you have a busy schedule and can’t afford significant downtime, this combination is worth asking about.

For pigmentation, ageing or acne concerns, microneedling can be used alongside a series of chemical peels targeted to address the main concern, or alongside a targeted home care routine to achieve the best possible result.

Homecare between sessions

What you do between appointments directly affects your results. In the days immediately after microneedling, your skin is in active repair mode, so this is not the time for harsh actives. Your therapist will give you specific guidance, but in general: keep it gentle, keep it hydrated and protect your barrier.

Once your skin has settled, a targeted homecare routine reinforces the work done in the treatment room. Your therapist will recommend products suited to your skin’s current state and goals which is built around what your skin actually needs at the correct time. Skincare brands we work with, including Lamelle, Mesoestetic and QMS MediCosmetics, are formulated to support professional treatments rather than work against them.

Why microneedling remains the treatment we trust most

There are treatments promising faster results out there. There are treatments that produce more dramatic before-and-after photos and treatments that feel more impressive in the moment. We understand the appeal. Results that arrive quickly are satisfying and the aesthetics industry has always been good at delivering them.

But speed and safety are not always the same thing and in skin, the gap between the two can take years to show up.

Some energy-based treatments, particularly those that use heat to force a rapid result, can produce impressive short-term changes while quietly accumulating damage in the deeper layers of the skin. Compromised collagen structure, thinning of the dermis, increased sensitivity and reactivity that becomes harder to manage over time. These are not immediate side effects. They show up gradually, sometimes years later and by then the connection to the original treatment is easy to miss.

Microneedling works differently. It creates a CONTROLLED mechanical stimulus i.e. a measured and predetermined controlled wound response the skin already knows how to handle. The injury is predictable, the depth is controlled and the healing process is the skin doing exactly what it was designed to do. There is no heat, no ablation, no disruption to the skin’s deeper architecture. Done correctly by an experienced practitioner, it supports the skin’s long-term health rather than borrowing against it.

That’s not to say it’s the right treatment for every concern – it isn’t. But it is the treatment we recommend most consistently, across the widest range of skin types and concerns, because we’re confident in what it does and what it doesn’t do. For us, that matters.

Where to start

If you’ve been considering microneedling, or if you’ve had it before and want to understand how to get more from it, a skin consultation is the best place to begin. We’ll look at your concerns, your skin’s current condition, and build a treatment plan that makes sense for you.
